“Europe Seen by the Young”- International project

This international project is held together with two countries: Poland and Turkey. The coordinator of the project is Mrs. Katargyna Wielgopolan from Polland. The duration of the project is of 2 years. The used language is English.

Activities: 

1. A chosen group of students exchanges e-mail addresses.

2. Masterchef International. - Each member of the project (each group) chooses two national dishes for the other members to cook and evaluate.

3. An international story (fairy tale), the title of which is to be suggested by the participants.

4. A guide of a young traveller. Each group chooses a country (their quide of the project member’s country) and creates a tourist guide with the most interesting places to visit by a young traveller.

5. The groups send each other seeds and bulbs of popular plants, then plant them and grow in their school gardens.

The Romanian team is formed of the college’s manager Mrs. Corina Tanase, the teacher of Informatics - Mrs. Delia Crisan, teacher of Economics Mrs. Maria Faur, teacher of English Mrs. Angela Porime.

Our first activity is called “Painting Eggs in Romania”.

The activity took place in the week called “Scoala altfel” when our students developed extra school activities. There participated students from the grades – IXD, XA. The students were dressed in Romanian traditional clothing “Ia Romaneasca”. They read different materials related to: Traditional ”Ia”, painting eggs in Maramures and general things - Painting Eggs in Romania. The students together with their teacher painted the eggs using coloured paper.

The traditional greeting is “Hristos a inviat!” that is for the English words ”Christ has resurrected.”

Valentine's Day at "Mediensis" Technical College

     Valentine's Day is a holiday observed on February 14th. It is celebrated in many countries around the world although it is not a holiday in most of them. The motto of this day is chosen from Robert Browning who said  

"Take away love and our earth is a tomb".

      The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished in the 18th century England.

      In recent years, Romania has also started celebrating Valentine's Day. Romania has also associated the spring festival called "Dragobete" with Valentine's Day.

      At "Mediensis" Technical College, our students have decorated the foreign language laboratory, have surfed the Internet, solved Valentine's worksheets, listened classical music interpreted by Andre Rieu.

      They have used many sites for doing their research related to Valentine's Day, the most important of them being: www.wikipedia.org, www.education.com, www.history.com and www.pininterest.com.

The 14th of February is the date that marks the celebration of Valentine`s Day, a day in which people from all over the world celebrate the gift of love and friendship. A special day filled with joy and emotion! Both children and adults celebrate Valentine’s Day. This day is set aside for exchanges of love with sweethearts, friends and family. But what do we really know about the origins of this celebration? Who is this Valentine and what really happened to him?

Valentine’s Day is said to take its origin from 3rd Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop. Before the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February (Lupercalia). The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man would be his companion for a year.

Saint Valentine, according to romantic legend, was a kind-hearted Roman priest who married young couples against the wishes of Emperor Claudius II. Roman Emperor Claudius banned marriage from his empire hoping that thus more men will join his army, but Valentine secretly performed marriages. When Claudius found out about Valentine, he sentenced him to death. While in prison, Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. Before his death, he sent a farewell message to her, signed "From your Valentine". The phrase is still used on Valentine cards today.

On Valentine's Day we give cards, candy and flowers to the people we love. Students sign Valentine's Day cards and bring them to school for their classmates. Popular Valentine's Day symbols include red and pink hearts, bows and arrows, and Cupid. Cupid is a mythical figure. He is a winged god of love and the son of Venus.

So... If there is someone you love or like, sent them a valentine card to show your feelings. 

Remember that a traditional valentine doesn’t have the name of the sender!

“Postcard Exchange” Project - Results

The postcard exchange is a project that allowed the teachers and students to send and receive postcards from all over the world. The project was led by Mrs. Annalies Moris from Varendonck College, Netherlands. “Mediensis” Technical College was involved with two groups of students (selected from grades X A, XB, XC, XID) that were led by the teachers: Angela Porime, Anca Aflat and Delia Crisan. 

During this project we exchanged postcards and letters related to Romania and the following countries: 

1) Netherlands – both groups of students received postcards and letters from teacher Annalies Morris and her students.

• the first group of students received letters about the climate, landscape, flowers, water system, typical Dutch food. The beautiful postcard and letters were written by the students: Tim, Kees de Veth, Peprun. 
• the second group of students received postcards and letters related to Netherlands’ landscape and buildings. They were written by Thomas, Marrik and Maud. 

2) Canada – teacher Patti McCurdy, College Durocher, Saint Lambert, Quebec. The letters and postcards were written by the group of students no.205. They wrote about their school programme, landscape, traditional meal – called ”poutine” – and about the hobbies.

3) Australia – the letters and postcards were sent from Macleod College, Melbourne. They were written by the students: Amal, Shane and Panet. The subjects were related to Australia’s landscape, beaches, poisonous animals, sports – basketball, netball, soccer – favourite musical styles – pop, rock, electro – and the school’s programme. 

4) Senegal – Lycee Jacques Prevert, Sally Portudal. Sally Portudal sent a wonderful postcard and wrote about the official language, capital, climate and population. 

5) France – Madame Diack and her students from Nantes. Lucas and Karen wrote about Nantes and the river Loire and sent us a beautiful postcard. 

6) Canada – Ms. Kolbe and her students wrote related to their high school Manitoba, Winnipeg. 

• the first group of students wrote about their school programme, sports as hockey, baseball, music and climate. The letters were signed by Ben, Caleigh and Sadie. 
• the second group of students wrote about school subjects, sports as soccer, baseball, football; local parks and the climate.  Remarkable are the words written in the Romanian language by a student of a Romanian origin named Theodor Cristian Constantin.

Thank you, all the schools and colleges involved in this beautiful project. Thanks are also addressed to everybody who has contributed at this project, to the coordinator of the project Mrs. Annalies Moris, teachers and students.

Charity and Christmas at "Mediensis" Technical College

---

Christmas is one of the most beautiful Christian celebrations. It commemorates the birth of the holy child, Jesus Christ. In our college, Christmas is the time for decorating, gift giving and singing carols. There is also the time for thinking at the words of Francis of Assisi:

"Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance".

This week, on Tuesday, two classes of students (XA and XIIA grades) brought gifts for the old and ill people from our town's asylum. Teachers and students also sang carols "O, ce veste minunata" and "Jingle Bells". The classes were coordinated by the following teachers: Mirela Maior, Sanda Pridon and Angela Porime.

I want to thank you all, students and teachers involved in this charitable activity.
